On May 5, 2022, Hughes, Steele, and Scheible played together as a trio for the first time at Jojos, a DC venue presenting jazz music every day of the week. The intention of the group, headed by Hughes on soprano saxophone and effects, is to play free, improvised music for the entire duration of the gig-- from 6:30pm to 10pm with two short breaks. The patrons of this famously lively bar and restaurant are a bubbling backdrop for the trio's free sonic explorations, showcasing Scheible's hypnotic and responsive drumming alongside Steele's moody bass lines.

This no-frills recording was captured as a voice memo on Hughes' iPhone 6. It is an hour of non-stop improvisation, demanding keen ears, creative openness, and a strong sense of artistic integrity from each member of the trio. The set is available to listen to in its entirety as the last track (#13). It has also been divided into 12 separate tracks; allowing the listener to experience parts of the set individually. The track titles portray some of the poetry of Hughes' artistry, framing various moments of the set with suitable imagery.

As this may have been challenging music to allow during dinner and drinks in an establishment accustomed to the more upbeat rhythms of tune-centric Jazz music, I want to thank Mr. Bowie, Bethanya, Dario, and Mike for their openness. Additionally, thanks to the patrons of Jojo's for being fascinating test subjects and an important part of the recording. Your energy was noticed and appreciated. A lot of love to all.
